| Make It Count For Something |

The movie, “Saving Private Ryan” is one of those movies you dread going to see. Its graphic depiction of the allied invasion of Normandy Beach leaves nothing to the imagination. At the theater I watched portions of the movie with my eyes closed. In reality, twenty-five hundred allied troops lost their lives that day.
The story is told that, as one of the first landing craft neared the beach, to unload its cargo of green troops, a young lieutenant attempted to muster courage among his men by reminding those in his platoon of the value and cost of freedom. Moments before the landing craft’s ramp lowered to spill his men onto the beach, he shouted, “Many of you will not live through this day, so make your lives count for something!”
It would have been easy for Jesus to avoid the “battle ground” of the Garden of Gethsemane. However, with the value and cost of freedom firmly embraced within His heart, Jesus boldly strode into the Garden with His eyes wide open.
How grateful we should be today that in delivering Himself to the mob and ultimately dying on the cross, Jesus made His life count for us! |

Dear Father, the sacrifice of Your Son Jesus is so precious to me. As I seek to follow in His steps, I pledge to make my life count for something! In Jesus’name. Amen.

| 네 삶을 무언가 값진 데 바쳐라 |

| “사람의 모양으로 나타나셨으매 자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 복종하셨으니 곧 십자가에 죽으심이라.” ( 빌립보서 2:8) |

영화 ‘라이언 일병 구하기’는 보기 두려운 영화 가운데 하나입니다. 노르망디 해안에서 벌어진 연합군의 공격 장면은 상상을 초월합니다. 극장에서 저는 여러 장면에서 눈을 감고 있었습니다. 실제로 그 날 2,500명의 연합군 장병들이 목숨을 잃었습니다.
이야기의 줄거리는 이렇습니다. 선발대 상륙정 하나가 배에 태운 해병들을 상륙시키기 위해 해안에 접근하자 젊은 장교가 자기 중대 부하들의 사기를 북돋아 주기 위해 자유의 소중함과 그 대가를 말해 줍니다. 부대원들을 내려 주기 위해 상륙정이 해안에 트랩을 내리기 몇 분 전에 대위가 큰 소리로 외칩니다. “너희들 가운데 많은 사람들이 오늘 살아남지 못할 것이다. 그러므로 너희들의 삶을 뭔가 값진 데 바쳐라.”
예수님이 겟세마네 동산에서의 ‘전장’을 피하기란 쉬운 일이었을 것입니다. 그러나 자유의 가치와 그 대가가 예수님의 가슴을 강하게 저몄습니다. 그래서 큰 뜻을 생각하여 담대히 죽음을 맞으러 나아가셨습니다.
예수님이 자신의 몸을 군중들의 손에 내어주고 우리를 위해 십자가에 죽으신 사건을 오늘 우리에게 얼마나 감사해야 되는지 모릅니다! 예수님께서는 우리를 위해 자신의 삶을 값지게 하셨습니다. |
